Heirloom of Vietnam – "Shell Lacquer Painting", this is a famous lacquer artwork.
Artist will select the suitable wood and have a treatment process. Lacquer artists apply the natural lacquer and color to wood, and wait until the lacquer gets dried. The product is firmed as the process is done on the wood.
Shell Lacquer Painting is done directly on the ready-treated wood and the wood will be filled with a layer of natural lacquer which gradually seeps through to a core of wood to make it harder and against any rotting by insects.
The various type of shells (eg. Mother-Of-Pearl or others), and some in gold foils, will be used and inlaid on the lacquer and wood to form the subject. The lacquerware artist will use a very pointed knife to carve the details on the shell, which make the design more lively and attractive. And this will be filled with many layers of lacquer on top and rubbed in water until it becomes totally smooth. Once hardened the lacquer forms a lustrous durable surface that is imperious to moisture, insects, and oxidization making it ideal for preserving material. Lacquerware-polishing is the final stage. The unique polishing technique, it brings the shell lacquer painting surface to a high gloss. Every artwork is unique and will last for years. And let you have three-dimension and comfortable feelings. Also, it forms of noble, colorful, flourishing and in good taste. Each shell lacquer painting will require at least 90 days to complete.

Duck eggshell is specially applied in Vietnamese Lacquer Painting and it is the shell of the ducts already hatched because of its thickness and whiteness. The eggshell will be stick onto the lacquer painting following the ready-made design then filled with ten layers of lacquer and rubbed in water. Duck eggshell in natural state is white then the next step, the Vietnamese lacquerware artist will color the eggshell by using the mineral pigments mixing with some chemical dyes to reach the highest smoothness, then covered with many layers of lacquer and again rubbed in water in between each layer. The final stage is Lacquerware-polishing stage.
Furthermore, Chicken eggshell and Quail eggshell are applied in Vietnamese Lacquer Painting as well. Chicken eggshell has colors in red and white. Quail eggshell is thinner compared with other eggshells and is suitable for more precise and slim areas.

Selecting the suitable wood, treated and then filled with a layer of natural lacquer.
- Apply a mixture of natural lacquer and plaster to build up the lacquerware surface step by step until it reaches the same level.
- The raw lacquerware also covered with a piece of gauze to prevent any crack or curving shape. Then, process an original lacquer embryo.
- Drawing the design, carved a dent line by various type of tools, and apply color.
- Apply gold or silver foils, inlaid the shell, eggshell forming the main subject, like the bird.
- Presenting the background of picture by color painting, eg. scenery.
- Again, filled layers of lacquer on top and in between each layer, artist will wait until it is dry and do the rubbing in water. Last stage is lacquerware-polishing.
- Shell/ Eggshell Lacquer Painting will require 30 days to complete. Hardened lacquer forms a lustrous durable surface, imperious to moisture, insects and oxidization making it ideal for preserving material.

Below are some general precautions to help you getting the most use out of your lacquerware.
- Keep your lacquer painting out of direct sunlight and away from extreme heat. Ultraviolet light and extreme heat will fade the lacquer painting surface and result in tiny cracks.
- Avoid using chemicals to clean your lacquer painting. Instead, try to use dry or
damp cloth to gently wipe away dust and moisture.
When you want to wash your lacquer painting, use mild soap and warm water. Rinse and dry immediately after cleaning. Do not clean with hot water or try not to soak your lacquer painting for too long. Wax can be used for cleaning the dirt.
